Operation Shrek Eye

“Shrek Eye” is apparently urban slang for when a person gets hurt and has puffy eyes. For reasons not easily discovered, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department titled their recent investigation “Shrek Eye.”

And what an investigation it was! For two years, they worked together with other agencies in Pascagoula and elsewhere. Drug Trafficking Task Force Agent Lt. Ricky Jones said, “"We completely dismantled this organization from top to bottom, and some of the biggest narcotics traffickers in the southeast have been arrested because of this case." You gotta love it!

Twenty-one people have been arrested so far and others are being investigated still. The amount of information that was gained may lead to more arrests in the future.

The enormity of the operation boggles the mind. This case stretched all the way from Jackson County MS to Chicago to El Paso, TX and into northern Mexico. The kingpin here in Jackson County was a resident of Gulf Park Estates in Ocean Springs, one Harlen Herron. Herron’s Aunt Cathy Morris in El Paso had connections with a violent drug cartel in Mexico. She would send thousands of pounds of marijuana and over 20 kg of cocaine to Herron. Herron would sell the drugs and use the money to buy assault weapons like AK-47’’s and AR-15’s at gun shows and pawn shops in several different states. Then he would deliver those to his Aunt Cathy’s cartel contact – Jose Ontiveros, who would smuggle them into Mexico. Around and around it would go again.

Lt. Jones said that Herron’s organization had moved about 50,000 pounds of marijuana and about $5 million in cocaine, just in the last few years. The great news is that Herron, Morris, Ontiveros and others are now serving multi-year sentences in prisons, and the cycle has been halted.

It’s bad enough that drugs are on the street and people are ruining their lives with them. But then add to that the fact that American assault rifles were being sold or traded and then used to ruin the lives of even more people with terror and killing.

A lot of cash, marijuana, cocaine and a number of assault weapons were collected as a result of the investigation as well.
